This program category currently covers three food initiatives in Cross Lake.
Hot lunch program:
Pimicikamak Okimawin has successfully continued to supply food to two schools in Cross Lake – Mikisew and ONR schools.
Manitoba Hydro has decimated the lands, natural resources and natural foods of the Pimicikamak people. The hot lunch program is seen as a remedial tool to replace what Manitoba hydro has destroyed and has affected the once healthy diet of the Pimicikamak people. Further, the traditional economies has also crippled a once strong economic system that self sustained the Pimicikamak people.
This is one program aimed at reducing the mass poverty and mass unemployment of the pimicikamak people. The provision of hot lunch provided the much nutrition of impoverished families at the schools which aids towards their physical, mental, emotional and spiritual well-being.Â
This program has enabled Pimicikamak Okimawin to hire itâs own citizens who prepare food food for the many students at both schools. The staff are certified as food handlers and cooks to ensure compliance with health and safety standards.
Pimicikamak program coordinators and the financial administration team take care of the program behind the scenes, ensuring everything runs smoothly, and that the cost, quality and delivery of food items are done right.
During summer. Pimicikamak starts up the Domestic Fishing program and works with local fishermen to supply fresh fish to the citizens in Cross Lake. Using a table that calculates payment of fishermen based on weight of fish caught, the Pimicikamak program coordinators are now able to manage this program and its corresponding budget successfully on their own.
Christmas turkey program:
Every Christmas, Pimicikamak through the grant, provides its citizens with a distribution of turkey/ham/roast/potatoes. Every family is provided a fair amount of food based on the headcount, and the staff at Pimicikamak Okimawin will all come together to help with the food distribution.  The distribution is made available to all Pimicikamak citizens living in Pimicikamak territory, Thompson and Winnipeg. This program has been very successful to date.
